Garia – the Heart of South Kolkata

One of the oldest settlements in South Kolkata, Garia boasts of an exciting amalgamation of history and modern developments. The partition of India in 1947 made the Garia region one of the most demanded localities, with people flooding in around rich farm lands along the Adi Ganga canal (Tolly’s Nulla) that connected Kolkata (Calcutta) to Vidyadhari River in the east. Today, as Kolkata expands, there has been an upheaval in infrastructural developments, but the region, thanks to its history and people, still upholds the very cultural values that define ‘Bangla’.

The neighborhood

Garia is a neighborhood that has seen the growing up of legends like Asapurna Devi, Kabir Suman, Kaushik Ganguly, Anurag Basu, Rashid Khan and many more. It is the same place that is depicted in Bengali works of art including Satyajit Ray’s Pather Panchali. Living in Garia, you share the same nostalgia that makes us proud Bongs! It’s not surprising to hear when young families, deeply rooted in their culture, search for homes in Garia. It’s a neighborhood that allows you freedom of expression, safety and a society that instills creativity.

Garia is well connected to all places in Kolkata through a wide network of roads and means of public transport. It is just 27 kilometers away from the Netaji Subhash International Airport and 22 kilometers from Howrah Railway Station. Local connectivity has been heightened with the recent construction of Kavi Nazrul Metro station. Two more metro stations, Kabi Subhash and Shahid Khudiram ease you journey, regardless of where you stay in Garia. Further, with four major bus terminals, getting around the city gets easier. The rest of your transportation need would be taken care of by yellow taxis, auto rickshaws and hand drawn rickshaws.
